New strawberry varieties for South Tyrol

Abstract

Laimburg Research Centre annually conducts variety comparison trials, aimed at renewing the South Tyrolean strawberry variety panorama, which is still linked to the historic Dutch variety Elsanta. During the year 2019, the cvs Limalexia, Roxana, Sonsation had positively distinguished themselves both in terms of vegetative growth and in terms of yield (increase from 50 to 90%, if compared to Elsanta). From a qualitative point of view, the fruit of the cvs Limalexia and Sonsation, in addition to being characterized by a good fruit weight, had a sugar content higher than Elsanta, while the other qualitative parameters such as acidity, consistency, aroma did not appear significantly different. The study of these varieties will continue over the next years.
